Rangreza रंगरेज़ा

Making his momentous and long-awaited Meridian Hall debut, the legendary AR Rahman will be in collaboration with pioneering composer and Royal Albert Hall associate artist Rushil Ranjan.

Together, they will work to reframe the shared divinity between Eastern and Western classical art forms and have co-composed a brand-new commission, Rangreza रंगरेज़ा, originally written for fellow Royal Albert Hall associate artist Abi Sampa, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and London Voices. The North American debut will feature Abi Sampa, with our TO Live Orchestra and That Choir.

Across the night, audiences will also hear Rahman’s most iconic and classic works from Roja and Guru to 127 Hours and Rockstar. Audiences can look forward to the maestro himself taking to the stage, accompanied by Ranjan’s signature orchestral arrangements and stagecraft. Conducted by Melvin Tay and featuring acclaimed soloists Sarthak Kalyani and Janan Sathiendran this promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime orchestral experience.

“Rangreza रंगरेज़ा” means “colourist,” someone who brings unexpected tones together, and in Sufi tradition, a vision of the divine as the ultimate artist colouring the universe with its blessings. It reflects both the artistry and the spirituality of this collaboration, as Rahman and Ranjan weave Western and Indian traditions into a vivid musical palette that reaches towards the natural and the divine.

The world premiere of Rangreza रंगरेज़ा was presented with lead support from the Bagri Foundation, and co-commissioned by the Royal Albert Hall Philharmonic Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, TO Live, and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

A world premiere by Rushil Ranjan featuring vocalists Jyoti Nooran, Abi Sampa and Sarthak Kalyani, with Manchester Camerata conducted by Melvin Tay

Blending the spiritual depth of Sufi devotional music with sweeping classical arrangements, Ruhaniyat brings together an extraordinary line-up of artists – Jyoti Nooran, who rose to fame as one half of the Nooran Sisters, and is celebrated as one of the most iconic voices in contemporary Sufi music; the genre-defying Manchester Camerata, known for their bold collaborations with the likes of New Order and the Pet Shop Boys; and Ranjan himself, recently announced as the Royal Albert Hall’s latest Associate Artist, and whose compositions have graced stages from the Edinburgh International Festival to London’s Southbank Centre as well as major productions for Netflix, ITV and Film4.

They are joined by outstanding vocalists Abi Sampa, and Sarthak Kalyani. Memory shapes the past, defines the present, and guides the future.

In 18th century Britain, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu defied medical convention by championing inoculation, a practice she had witnessed in Turkey. Facing resistance from the Royal Society, she trusted the expertise of inoculators across Asia and Africa, paving the way for evidence-based, preventative medicine. Her advocacy laid the groundwork for Edward Jenner who would refine these ideas 40 years later, leading to the first vaccine.

Through Lady Mary’s story, Dangerous Matter explores memory in its many forms: historical, personal, and biological. Who do we remember for shaping the world and transforming global health? How does memory define identity and legacy? And how does the body itself remember, protecting us through generations?

Blending science and history, Dangerous Matter is a powerful reflection on the role of memory in medicine and human progress.
